The problem

The molecular pathology laboratory was experiencing multiple operational challenges that affected workflow efficiency, compliance, and financial performance. Key issues included:

  • Inefficient specimen accessioning processes that created redundancies and increased turnaround time.

  • Gaps in laboratory safety protocols and documentation, risking noncompliance with CAP, CLIA, and OSHA standards.

  • Inconsistent onboarding and training for new technologists.

These challenges threatened service quality, regulatory compliance, and overall operational effectiveness.

The Solution

I led and implemented several multi-layered process improvements to address these issues:

Operational Process Redesign

I conducted a full review of the specimen accessioning workflow and redesigned the process to be more intuitive and eliminate redundant steps. I then standardized the approach to specimen pickup, accessioning, preparation, and processing to reduce variability and improve reliability across the team. Finally, I developed and delivered hands-on technical training for three new technologists and rotating medical students, residents, and fellows, ensuring consistency in laboratory operations.

Quality and Compliance Strengthening

In my capacity as Laboratory Safety Officer, I updated and enforced safety protocols, conducted required inspections, and ensured alignment with CAP, CLIA, OSHA, and institutional standards. I also provided comprehensive safety training to all personnel and maintained detailed, audit-ready documentation.

The Outcomes

The changes I implemented produced measurable improvements in lab performance, safety, and financial outcomes:

  • Reduced workflow redundancies, resulting in faster turnaround times and more consistent specimen processing.

  • Zero major findings during CAP and institutional inspections attributed to safety and quality protocol improvements.

  • Improved team competency and readiness, as evidenced by quicker onboarding for new technologists and positive feedback from medical trainees.
